Wauconda to vote on recreational vehicle rules

Wauconda’s Village Board has finished drafting rules for storing recreational vehicles on private property. An RV is any vehicle or boat designed for temporary living or recreation.

“We just wanted to finish this one way or another,” said Trustee Lincoln Knight. “It’s been over two years.”

While most recommendations remained largely unchanged, the most significant change is the combined length allowed. Residents are allowed two RVs on the property. One RV can be a maximum of 30 feet, but the overall total of the two can be no more than 45 feet.

Residents voiced concern at past meetings that there are travel trailers and motor homes longer than 30 feet. They said it was unfair to allow two vehicles to be a combined 45 feet, but one vehicle could not be more than 30 feet.

“The object of what we’re trying to do here is eliminate large vehicles,” said Trustee Pat Murphy.

The Village Board also wants RVs stored on trailers on improved surfaces. The Board made an exception for pontoon boats after residents said pontoons were not sold on trailers. At last week’s Board meeting, the Board also made exceptions to allow non-motorized, recreational water craft less than 18 feet in length to rest on an improved surface without a trailer.
