Cleve will promote itself as a prime destination for holiday-makers in recreation vehicles, council voted yesterday. The District Council of Cleve discussed the proposal by the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) at a general meeting of council on Wednesday, January 16, 2008.
Council CEO Tony Siviour told councillors he was approached by visiting CMCA assessors last week who were keen to promote Cleve as part of the CMCA’s ‘RV Friendly Town’ scheme.
Of the 13 criteria required to qualify for the scheme, the Cleve township meets all except one point - the provision of long-term parking within 10km of the town centre.
“Following the meeting (with CMCA) I have discussed with showgrounds president Trudy Claxton the possibility of the area to the left of the entrance to the showgrounds being utilised as a long-term parking option,” Mr Siviour said.
“This area has eight powered sites with eight water outlets, toilets and showers.”
Both the showgrounds committee and the CMCA have supported the proposal.
Following adoption of the proposal at Wednesday’s council meeting Cleve will commit to a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with the CMCA to join the scheme.
Council will now commit to ‘RV Friendly town’ signage at a cost of $520.
Council will also investigate the potential for Arno Bay to participate in the scheme.
The CMCA boasts more than 50,500 members.
The ‘RV Friendly Town’ scheme is an initiative of the CMCA to promote RV tourism related services across Australia.
An ‘RV Friendly Town’ is one that provides amenities and services for the mobile traveller.
Despite the scheme being well-known interstate, Cleve will be one of the first SA towns to be designated as an ‘RV Friendly Town’.
Cleve will also seek to promote itself as a future rally destination for the club.
